Criterion C - Communication skills

While making the film, I had a chance to improve my non-verbal communication skills a great deal. I gained important knowledge of the film language and had to analyze how to combine images and clips with voiceover to produce the desired effect. At times this was difficult because parts of the narration were really specific, and I did not want the visuals to be too literally linked with the narration. When we watch history documentaries in class, they don’t always have footage illustrating exactly what the voice of god is talking about. I also didn’t want the film to simply be a montage of unconnected pictures/shots, and I struggled hard to maintain this balance throughout the editing process. The general consensus from those to whom I showed the film was that the clips went well with the narration and that the film was well put together. A big part of the film’s message is communicated via writing. While writing and reviewing the voiceover, I learned about the style required for a documentary narration and struggled with my written communication skills.
